Mozilla Foundation is finally rolling out AV1
support for its Firefox web browser. Mozilla took more time to release
this update for its web browser. After a couple of months, the Firefox
browser is now getting support for AV1 hardware decoding video format
for Windows.
AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) is designed for video
transmissions over the Internet. It was developed by Alliance for Open
Media in March 2018. AV1 is the successor of the VP9 video format which
was developed by Google. Initially, the official announcement of the AV1
format came in September 2015. But, the first version 0.1.0 of AV1 was
released in April 2016.
The AV1 video codec runs the contents
without creating any excessive load on the computer's hardware and
software. AV1 hardware acceleration offers better video compression
efficiency, which means more energy-efficient for tablets or PCs which
can extend battery life for devices. It reduces energy consumption. This
video format is also budget-friendly, open-source, and available
without any royalty (unlike HEVC or MPEG-2).
Besides the energy
efficiency, the AV1 video codec also provides improved video quality. It
will be helpful for viewers who watch content on OTT platforms such as
Netflix, YouTube, and Prime videos. AV1 processes videos in high quality
that enhance the user's viewing experience. It's a piece of big good
news for content providers, and also for Firefox fans.
Where
other companies such as Google and Microsoft released support for AV1
video format for their web browser at the end of 2020, Mozilla took hold
to release AV1 support for Firefox. AV1 hardware acceleration requires
high-end configured PCs with the latest software.
According to
the reports, the AV1 video codec is compatible with an 11th generation
Intel Core processor with an Nvidia GeForce RTC 30 Series GPU, Intel
Iris X Graphics, or an AMD Radeon RX 600 Series graphics. At the initial
stage, only a few devices matched the configuration since 2018. That’s
why Mozilla took time to release AV1 video codec support for its web
browser.
Mozilla Foundation plans to release the upcoming version
of the Firefox browser in May 2022. Firefox version 100 will be updated
with AV1 hardware acceleration. We’ll surely notify you when it will be
available with the public version.
